In most cases, however, back pain is not usually a sign of a serious condition and will improve within a few weeks if you’ve pulled or strained a muscle in your middle or upper back, says Bupa.
It can be up to four to six weeks if it’s your lower back that hurts (this is called acute lower back pain), notes the health body.
However, for some people, back pain can become chronic and continue for many months or even years.

“If you have back pain that’s causing you significant problems or doesn’t seem to be improving after a few weeks, it could be worth seeing a physiotherapist,” advises Bupa.
